FISHING ON THE KENAI

Our fishing season begins in late April of each year.  April 25th until June 6th is our combo season where our clients fish Halibut and King Salmon in the Cook-Inlet on the same trip.  From the 1st of May until the 15th we catch Halibut very consistently in 20 to 30 ft of water as they are following the bait fish into shore.  At this time of year when we anchor up to do this we also catch King Salmon all on the same tackle (25 lbs. test line & 2 ounces of led with salmon rods).

The peak of the King run in the combo season is the 1st week of May until the last week of May.  Halibut catches are typically limits at this time of year.  The famous Kenai River also starts producing good catches after the 15th of May.  Kenai River Kings average 30 to 45 lbs. at this time of year.  Saltwater Kings average 20 to 35 lbs. at this time of year

The 1st week of June we also start our Remote Westside Sockeye Salmon Fishing.  Typically we spend 2 days and 1 night on the Westside but groups can choose how long they want.  The peak of Sockeye fishing on the Westside is June 7th until July 10th.

The Months of June and July are the peak time for Kenai River Kings.  June is also the peak time of the Kasilof River King Salmon ( average size 15 to 25 lbs.) June and July are also our peak times for Halibut (partly because of wind conditions being mild).  June 12 until the 30th upper river Kenai Kings are at their peak for the 1st run.  July 6th through the end of the month is peak Kenai River late run Kings.

Westside Silver Salmon Starts about the 30th of July and goes until the 1st of September.  July 31st ends our King Salmon season.  August is primarily Silver Salmon on the Kenai River and also the Westside.

Pink Salmon run on the Kenai River every even numbered year (example year 2004, 2006, 2008 etc..) August 1st until the 25th is the peak of Silver Salmon. September 1st until the 15th is our second run of Silver Salmon on the Kenai River (this fish average 14 to 18 lbs).  Halibut fishing at this time of year is Good but weather is getting windier and harder to get out to the fish.

Note: Every year fish runs are not the same and this is not an exact schedule.

For more information about the best fishing times during the year check our Seasons Web page or the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
